Funke was a Master Goldsmith from Dresden who had an important role in the early years of the Meissen factory. His skills at decorating metalwork with enamels and gilding were used to embellish the white porcelain prior to specialised enamel colours being developed which could withstand high temperatures in the kiln.

Tea bowl and saucer of hard-paste porcelain, probably decorated by George Funcke, made by the Meissen porcelain manufactory, Saxony, ca.1718.
Physical description
Tea bowl and saucer of hard-paste porcelain, applied with moulded leaves around the lower rims, partly painted in blue and puce enamels, and gilded with small birds on branches.
