Tea Bowl and Saucer

ca. 1716-1720 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Lustre decoration was only used very sparingly at the Meissen factory, usually on small panels in the borders surrounding Chinoiserie or landscapes decorating expensive objects. It was invented by the chemist Johann Friedrich Böttger after a period of painstaking experiments with gold and crimon enamels. Its use here to cover fully the interiors of this early teabowl and saucer, indicates these are rare experimental pieces.
