Adolphe-Alphonse Assi, a member of the International, led the Comité Central during its brief spell at the Hôtel de Ville. Many Parisians criticized the Comité for their refusal to recognize their revolutionary position and take action against Versailles. Here, Assi is accused of sitting on the fence between Versailles and Charenton, a small town near Paris, notable only for its lunatic asylum.
