The Virgin and Child

Relief
15th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a circular relief in terracotta representing the Virgin and Child. It was cast in Florence, probably in the 15th century, from the marble relief by Desiderio da Settignano in Turin. Another cast, but rectangular in shape and in painted stucco, is also in the collection (5767-1859).

The surface of this relief is not pigmented and the two haloes are made of gilded gesso. There is some damage to the gesso ground in the haloes and a diagonal break from the upper left through the Virgin's jaw, the Child's left forearm and the Virgin's right wrist.
