This silvered copper electrotype medal commemorates the inauguration of the Port of Calais. In the foreground there is a female figure, representing the town of Calais seated on a bale of merchandise, in her right hand she holds the caduceus, and with her left supports a shield bearing the arms of the town. There is an anchor at her feet and a boat by her side. Behind her stands another female figure in flowing drapery who holds up her right arm, and rests her left hand on the shoulder of the other figure, a fillet with the word FRANCE is bound about her helmeted head. To the right is an olive- tree with a scroll bearing the words PAX LABOR, a beehive, and a rudder view of the Port of Calais, with Dover Castle in the far distance. The medal is signed in the exergue, 'Louis Bottée.'
