Mr Herman Hart was the manager of a series of international exhibitions. During his travels around Europe, and especially the Balkan States he collected examples of local, contemporary pottery; usually simple objects for daily use. He donated this collection to the South Kensington Museum in 1917, this acquisition record now provides us with information about the provenance of these pots, which are otherwise extremely difficult to attribute.

Brief description | Jug of white earthenware covered with a white slip and painted in colours. Probably Hungarian, about 1850 to 1890. |
Physical description | Jug, whitish grey earthenware, hand painted in colours under a clear glaze. Pear-shaped body with wide neck and loop handle. Painted with vertical stripes and horizontal bands and zigzags in bright blue, green, yellow and manganese brown. |

Object history | Mr Herman Hart, the donor, attributed this jug to Transylvania in his accompanying acquisition notes. Mr Hart was manager of a series of International Exhibitions and acquired pottery on his travels to Europe, including all of the Balkan States. In 1917, when the jug was acquired by the V&A, Transylvania was still part of Hungary. |
