Thiers assisted by Favre is caricatured cutting off the right arm of France, that is Alsace Lorraine, the provinces they ceded to the Germans. The five milliard francs are piled in sacks on the ground and dreams of a socially orientated Republic sink with the setting sun on the horizon.
