This is a facsimile of the very first sketches for what was to become one of the most famous buildings of its time. Paxton, the architect, drew the original on blotting paper on 11 June 1850, while attending a meeting in Derby. The facsimile was made the following year, presumably to commemorate the opening of the Great Exhibition.

Object history
Comparison with the original shows that an extra ink blot has been added to the facsimile, which otherwise seems to have been made by a process of anastatic printing.
