Gambetta portrayed as alert and fighting is placed in front of a radiating sun which symbolizes Bordeaux, the headquarters of the 'guerre à outrance' faction of the war. A beam of light from his protruding eye dazzles Favre, who wriggles on his back in front of a waning moon, symbolizing Paris. When Gambetta heard about the armistice two days after it had been concluded he refused to accept it as anything other than a breathing space to refit and train the troops. On 6 February he resigned from the Government of National Defence because he felt totally out of sympathy with its aims.
