After the eclipse of the Army of the Loire, Gambetta and the Parisians pinned their hopes on the Army of the North, led by General Faidherbe. His victory at Ham, 65 miles north of Paris, was a decisive influence on Trochu and Ducrot's decision to attempt to break out at Le Bourget on 21 December. It soon became clear, however, that the Army of the North could not rescue Paris although it continued to harass the Prussians in the provinces until it was beaten at St Quentin.
Lithograph, coloured by hand.
