This caricature plays on the double meaning of the phrase tirer des carottes, to pull up carrots or to play a trick. Moltke, ordered by King William to find a new way to capture the French capital, studies a map. In his right hand he clutches a bunch of carrots bearing the names of key towns still unoccupied by his forces. The two carrots on the floor symbolize two Prussian victories. Bismarck enters the room in the background and asks tentatively whether he has come up with an idea.
