Jules Vallès novelist and chief reporter of Le Cri du Peuple rants and rages in the foreground while members of the Government of National Defence cavort in the background. Early in January Vallès drew up a poster expressing his dissatisfaction with the Government, describing it as a mere continuance of the Empire.

Historical context | In this caricature, Jules Vallès (1832-85), novelist and chief reporter of Le Cri du Peuple, rants and rages in the foreground while members of the Government of National Defence (Thiers, Garnier-Pagès, Trochu, Simon, Favre and Picard) cavort in the background. Early in January 1871, Vallès drew up a poster expressing his dissatisfaction with the Government, describing it as a mere continuance of the Empire. 'Make way for the people! Make way for the Commune!' he cried. He was elected a member of the Commune and, although he safely escaped across the frontier at the end of the war, his death was reported three times. |
