Historical context
This lithograph depicts Napoleon III limping en route to Cassel to be imprisoned. Ironically, Napoleon III's place of imprisonment was the Schloss Wilhelmshohe, from which his uncle Jerome Bonaparte had ruled over the kingdom of Westphalia at the beginning of the century. He was released after the preliminaries of peace were signed by France and Prussia.
