Object history | Given by Lt.-Col. G. B. Croft Lyons, accessioned in 1904. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project. According to the original acquisition record, this object was from 'the Summer Palace at Yuan Ming Yuan, Peking'. Yuanmingy Yuan was the imperial summer retreat located north of Beijing that was plundered and destroyed by British and French troops during the Second Opium War in 1860. Lt. Col. G. B. Croft-Lyons, who donated a large and varied group of almost 100 objects to the V&A, does not seem to have spent time in China. It is more likely that this architectural ornament came from the Temple of Heaven, Beijing, rather than the Yuanming Yuan in circumstamces that are not yet known. |
