John Sims Reeves (1821-1900) was the foremost English operatic, oratorio and ballad tenor of his day. The role of Edgardo in Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor played a special part in his career. It was the role in which he made his debut in Italian opera on 29 October 1846 at La Scala in Milan with Catherine Hayes as Lucia, and his first principal role on the English operatic stage, with Louis Jullien's English Opera company at Drury Lane Theatre in December 1847. At Drury Lane the production was conducted by Hector Berlioz and sung in an English version, with Julie Doras-Gras as Lucia.
