This toy tiger was made in the town of Channapatna, in Karnataka, India, in about 1865. The town is still renowned for the production of its painted wooden toys. The tiger was acquired by the Indian Museum in 1867, presumably from the Paris Exposition Universelle of that year, and transferred to the South Kensington Museum (later the V&A) in 1879.

The wooden tiger, painted yellow and brown with black stripes, stands on a rectangular platform. The inside of its mouth is painted red.
