This is the reverse side of a bronze medal. It depicts a seated female figure holding flowers in her hand looking towards an approaching boat. In front of her there is a shield of arms, and a ribbon bearing an inscription. The inscription celebrates Sir John Pope Hennessy as the Governor of Mauritius and is dated 22nd December 1888. Pope Hennessy was a British politician, and colonial administrator who served as Governor of Hong Kong from 1877 to 1882. This medal is the work of Louis Oscar Roty, the leading French medallist of the late nineteenth century.

Physical description
Medal, reverse, bronze, struck from a die, and silvered; a seated female figure, holding flowers in her hand, and looking towards an approaching vessel. Before her is a shield of arms, and a ribbon bearing the words STELLA CLAVISQUE MARIS INDICI. In the distance to the right is a pier with a lighthouse. The legend reads thus:- A SIR JOHN POPE HENNESSY. K.C.M. G. GOUVERNEVR DEL'ILE MAVRICE ET DE SES DEPENDANCES LES MAVRICIENS RECONNAISSANTS. XXII DECEMBRE MDCCCLXXXVIII. Signed 'O. Roty'.
