This lottery medal was made in 1736 and commemorates Caroline Brandenburg of Ansbach (1683-1737), who was born in Ansbach, Germany, and became the Queen Consort of George II of Great Britain in 1727. She was a great patron of the arts, surrounding herself with artists, writers and intellectuals, and commissioning work and collecting jewellery, such as cameos and intaglios.
John Sigismund Tanner was medallist and engraver to the London Mint for nearly forty years. He was a native of Saxe-Gotha and came to England in 1728. He died in London in 1775.
