Roty revived the format of the Renaissance plaquette, though he usually added a second side. This innovation proved enormously influential on French medal design. The legend in French, reads: ‘J B Roty · Teacher · Elisabeth · Virginie · born Dedvit’; beneath in Latin, ‘Husbands and wives are joined with faithful love just as parents and children are with hands and devotion’.
