This bronze medal was struck to commemorate the visit of Christian IX, King of Denmark (1838-1906) and Louise of Hesse Cassel (1817-1898) to London. This medal is one of the series published by the Corporation of the City of London; 450 specimens were struck and are frequently found in leather cases with gold tooling and inscriptions on the lid.

Physical description | Medal of gilt bronze; obv.: CHRISTIANUS IX ET LOUISE D : G: DANIAE V: G: REX ET REGINA. Superimposed busts to right. Rev.: A seated female figure representing the City of London, holding in her right hand an address, and supporting with her left arm a staff from which flies a streamer, inscribed WELCOME CHRISTIAN IX TO LONDON. To the left is the Guildhall, and to the right a pedestal with a shield bearing the arms if the King of Denmark; upon the pedestal is the casket in which the address was presented. Signed 'F. Bowcher. F' Struck in commemoration of the visit of H.M the King of Denmark to the City of London. |
