This medal commemorates the capture of Porto Bello, on November 22nd, 1739 by Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757).
One side of the medal shows a half-length figure of Admiral Vernon, and the other side shows six ships entering Porto Bello harbour.
Portobelo is a port city in the Province of Colón in Panama and was under Spanish colonial posession, when Vernon captured it in 1739.
It is a small seaport on the Caribbean coast of Panama and the harbor was discovered and named by Columbus in 1502. A principal city of Spanish colonial America.
