The blue-decorated porcelain from Jingdezhen was highly successful because there was a long tradition of ceramic painting in China. The potters from the Cizhou kilns, for example, had mastered the technique of painted decoration using iron as pigment.

Stoneware bottle, pear-shaped with ovoid body rising to a long neck with spreading mouth, standing on a low foot. Decoration of leaf design painted in brown over a cream-coloured slip under a clear glaze. The lower part of the bottle is unglazed.
