Ewer, porcelain painted in underglaze blue, China, Ming dynasty, Wanli period (1573-1620)
Physical description
Porcelain ewer with globular body, long narrow cylindrical neck rising to a flower-shaped mouth, and a curved spout with applied branches. Painted in underglaze blue with six vertical compartments on the body, containing bird on rock design, the double-gourd vase, and the rolled-up scroll pendant with tassel. Above this is a band of sceptre-heads (ruyi), and the bird on the rock is again depicted round the neck. The spout is entirely blue.
