This box was made of successive layers of lacquer applied to a wooden core, and subsequently carved with fine details. This technique was completely established by the 15th century, during the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Small carved boxes of this type represent a popular item during the 16th century; they were generally decorated with flowers, but landscapes, figures and fruits were also used on a few examples.
