Painting in slip is a simple and inexpensive process, usually relying on local materials, basic skills and low-temperature firings. Drawing on local traditions, inventive potters across the globe have achieved quite different results, ranging from the calligraphic slip painting of Chinese Cizhou stonewares to the mass-produced marbled pottery of industrial Staffordshire.

Physical description

Painted in dark brown on a cream-coloured slip with stylised leaf design and horizontal bands on the upper body. The lower portion and the base painted in brown. Four spur-marks on the base.
