Theodoor Colenbrander (1841-1930) was one of the leading late-nineteenth century European designers employing an eclectic mix of Iznik and Japanese motifs in their designs for ceramics. As seen in the symmetrical floral pattern on this vase, his work was eccentric and eye-catching, combining forms and colours and typifying Dutch Art Nouveau.

Colenbrander joined the firm of Rozneburg in 1884 and left in 1889. This vase dates to his time at the factory. Designs in the Colenbrander style were continued for many years after his departure.

Vases such as this were often displayed in garnitures.
