Physical description
Flask and flask stopper in coloured glass, with painted decoration in gilding and enamels. The form of the flask is based on a Venetian shape. Its decoration combines Chinese floral ornament of the 1400s with Moorish arches.

Object history note
Purchased from the Paris 1867 Exhibition. The form of the flask, intended as a claret jug, is based on a Venetian shape, which had evolved fully and spread across Europe by about 1600, and was particularly common in Spain. Its decoration combines Chinese floral ornament of the 1400s with Moorish arches.
Historical context note
Contemporary critical response to the Maës display at the Paris 1867 Exhibition was mixed, but, as in previous exhibitions, he won an award.
