This bronze medal depicts the bust of Queen Victoria to the left, draped and laureate, is struck by Frank Bowcher, England, in 1897. This was a national medal awarded for proficiency in science by the Department of Science and Art (this is also inscribed at medal).

Frank Bowcher was a British medallist and sculptor. He studied in London at the National Art Training School, under Edward Onslow Ford; and in Paris, where he was influenced by the work of Jules-Clément Chaplain and Oscar Roty. He was a founder-member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and until the 1930s exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy.

Physical description

Medal depicts on the obverse: bust of Queen Victoria to the left, crowned and laureate. With the inscription: VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QVEEN & EMPRESS Reverse the inscription within a laurel wreath:
AWARDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART FOR PROFICIENCY IN SCIENCE.
Signed on the truncation F.B.
