This gold medal depicting Queen Victoria by medallist Frank Bowcher is struck in England and dated 1897. The medal depicts the bust of the Queen to the left, crowned and laureate.

This was a national medal awarded for success in art by the Department of Science and Art (this is also inscribed at medal).

Frank Bowcher was a British medallist and sculptor. He studied in London at the National Art Training School, under Edward Onslow Ford; and in Paris, where he was influenced by the work of Jules-Clément Chaplain and Oscar Roty. He was a founder-member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and until the 1930s exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy.

Physical description

Medal depicts on the obverse: bust of Queen Victoria to the left, crowned and laureate. With the inscription: VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QVEEN & EMPRESS Reverse the inscription within a laurel wreath:
NATIONAL MEDAL FOR SVCCESS IN ART AWARDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART
