Medal
19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This is a bronze medal made by Thomas Webb in England, around 1805. The obverse of this medal represents a bare head of Lord Nelson. The reverse is after a drawing by J. Flaxman, and showing Bellona stepping over the sea towards was galleys.
This piece very occasionally occurs in a circular black imitation shagreen case with an advertisement for the author's next medal on a circular piece of paper affixed to the back. Milford Haven is incorrect in stating that this piece is by Wyon and that it was struck in 1820. There is an obverse cliche in copper gilt in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
