History of Bristol Trade and Commerce

Print
ca. 1990 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

These wood engravings by artist George Tute (born 1933) were photographically enlarged and silk screened onto ten panels measuring 1 x 2.5 metres. They were used to mark the different levels of garage parking within the Gallery shopping mall, and therefore served both a decorative and a functional purpose. In this mural is depicted Bristol Castle from the Roman times to the Civil War, and processions of the city's trades guilds carrying symbols of their trades at different times. This is one of a set of three proofs for the murals, found at E.4046-1995 to E.4048-1995.
