Woman's costume for a married Arab woman, based on a dress of woven silk and linen (silk warp in blue, red, yellow & green with linen weft) with embroidered panels in cross & herringbone stitch in colours & metal thread. The dress is full cut with flared skirts , triangular hanging sleeves narrow at the shoulder with silk patchwork above the arm and very wide opening at wrist. Also accessorised with:
A) Dark blue velvet bolero jacket with short tight sleeves, embellished with gold braid
B) Headdress, a cap covered with silk-embroidered woollen cloth and decorated with imitation coins
C) (Not on CIS, probably missing or attached to B) Cotton head-veil
D) Sash, printed wool in bright magenta with narrow floral stripe, knotted fringe, probably Egyptian work for Eastern market.

Object history | Miss Orwin, the donor, purchased the dress and veil (which is currently missing, but may be attached to the headdress) from the weaver's whilst in Bethlehem, and the headdress and jacket from a local dealer. The ensemble represents the traditional costume worn by a Palestinian married woman. The ensemble was exhibited in the exhibition World of the Bible (Victoria and Albert Museum, 1 October - 28 November 1965). |
