Purchased by Lady Charlotte Schreiber from Emerson Norman, Norwich, for £5 in May 1869

Probably made about the same time of Frederick the Great's successes in the Seven Year's War, and his convention with England in 1756 against France and her Allies.
The bust of Frederick II is copied with slight modifications from a portrait at one time in the possession of Graf von Hochberg, at Rohnstock, painted by Antoine Pesne and engraved by J.G. Wille.
Cyril Cook in his Life and Work of Robert Hancock attributed the print to Robert Hancock, the engraver who worked for the Worcester porcelain factory and until recently this attribution was generally accepted.

The source painting of King Frederick II of Prussia (1740-1786) by Antoine Pesne (1683-1757) is illustrated fig. 45B. The authors refute the connection to Hancock: 'Cyril Cook in his Life and Work of Robert Hancock attributed this engraving and that of the Prussian Hero No. 2 to Robert Hancock. This seems unlikely as it does not appear to be in his normal style, nor are the accompanying designs.'
