Watercolour on ivory miniature entitled 'Brittany peasant child at a cottage door'. Signed and dated (illegibly) lower right, "Betts-Brown. 1907 [? or 1909]". Betts-Brown was the artist's maiden name.

Object history note

Item Provenance: Given by Miss Violet Bursey, daughter of the artist.

Exhibition label on reverse of frame, lettered "RA 1937, No. 3, as Brittany Peasant child at Cottage Door, price £100. Mrs E.M. Bursey, 85 Woodbanks, NW11". Mrs Edith Marian Bursey (1876-1946) signed variously as 'E.M. Bursey', 'E M Boesé' (the original French name of her husband who was naturalised and who anglicised the name), and as 'Betts-Brown' (her maiden name). E.M. Bursey trained in Paris under Madame Debittemont-Chardon (author of La Miniature sur Ivoire). Exhibited at the Salon for 6 years. [see also E.43-45 and E.47-1989].
