This is a terracotta group of a peasant woman nursing her baby made by Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902) for James Staats Forbes, and given by his daughter Miss S. Mary Forbes to the Museum in 1912. While staying in London, Dalou exhibited in the Royal Academy, mostly subjects concerned with motherhood. There are also other versions of this subject by Dalou, including one formerly in the possession of Lady Wantage at Lockinge House, and now in the V&A (A.8-1993).

Summary
