This globular form jar and lid are made of porcelain painted under the glaze with cobalt blue. The decorative design depicts the eight Buddhist emblems; lotus, vase, paired fish, endless knot, flaming wheel, conch shell, canopy and umbrella as well as floral scrolls.
The shape and decorative design of this jar and lid are of 15th century style, though this object in fact dates to 1725-50. The cobalt blue is rich purplish colour. Its uneven application creates the 'heaped and piled' effect associated with Yuan and early Ming blue and white wares. The 'orange-peel' surface of the glaze is also typical of 15th century blue and white.

A 15th century jar and cover of this form is in the A. Clarke collection and was exhibited by the OCS in the exhibition Chinese Blue and White Porcelain', 1953-4, No.49, pl.6. |
