This oblong bronze plaquette entitled 'The Triumph of Wisdom' is cast in the second half of the 16th century in Germany by the medallist Peter Flötner.

It depicts a chariot with the seated figure of Wisdom, drawn to the left by two unicorns. She is accompanied by three female figures and holds two keys in her right hand, while above her head hovers the Holy Dove. The driver holds a whip with double thong in his right hand and the reins in his left.

Peter Flötner (b. ca. 1490 - d. 1546) was a German sculptor, engraver, architect and medallist. He merits a place of honour amongst the distinguished medallists of Nuremberg, who flourished during the first half of the 16th century.

Plaquettes are small plaques made of bronze, brass, lead or precious metals. They originated in the 1440s with the desire to reproduce coins and hardstone engravings from ancient Greece and Rome. Some were made as collector's pieces, to be viewed and displayed in private, and others for practical purposes. They also inspired designs in other media, from architecture to bookbindings.
