The Kondane Caves were excavated between 200–100 BC. Rock-cut caves, carved in imitation of wooden buildings, became an important Buddhist architectural form. This striking image focuses on the grand entrance to a chaitya, or hall of worship, its carved details replicating the multiple levels of a palace with railings, windows and balconies.
