"The gift of the States of the Island of Jersey to Mr. Edwd Touzel, for his heroic conduct in extinguishing conjointly with Lieut. Philip Leys of the Jersey Militia, and William Penteney of the 31st Regt Infy, the fire which had commenced in the Powder Magazine on the town hill of St. Heliers, on the 4th of June 1804." (rev.)

Historical context
A special gold medal was awarded by a grateful town to three men in 1804, when the powder magazine on the hill overlooking St. Heliers, Jersey, caught fire. Their prompt action almost certainly prevented the destruction of the town from the resultant explosion.
