This plaque is a self-portrait for it is depicting the portrait of Rudolf Mayer, who also made the piece. It shows his bust to the right, with the inscription below: RUD.MAYER KARLSRUHE. Behind the neck is inscribed: GEB.MDCCCIVL (born 1846). Above is a shield charged with a hammer and graver in saltire.

Rudolf Mayer was born in 1846 in Niedeck (Austria-Schlesia) where he also grew up. He then studied in Vienna under Otto König. From 1886-1913 he was professor at the 'Kunstgewerbeschule' in Karlsruhe. He designed plaquettes and medals for the mint of B.H. Mayer in Pforzheim and for the WMF, the 'Würtembergische Metallwarenfabrik' in Geislingen, Germany.

(it has to be noted that the writing of the date is wrong. It is also wrongly inscribed on the plaque. The artist's birthday is 1846, and in Roman writing this would be: MDCCCXLVI
