This is one of a group of seven portraits of Indian men and women from a scrapbook. It belonged to William Fullerton of Rosemount, and some of the people depicted may have been members of his household. The woman in this picture sits on a Dutch-style chair, smoking a huqqa resting on a candlestand with tripod legs derived from English patterns.

An Indian lady squatting on a European-style chair smoking a huqqa, which is on a small table. She wears a white gown and a green gold-edged shawl. In the backgroundis a green hedge.

Object history
William Fullerton (d.1805) was a Scottish surgeon based in Patna. He commissioned a set of illustrations of acquaintances and members of his household. See D.1181 to 1183-1903 and D.1187-1903, D.1193 to 1195-1903.
The museum purchased the set from Martinus Nijhoff in 1903. Registered file T88848/1903
