The Seashore at Dover

Oil Painting
ca. 1849 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Stanfield exhibited Shakespeare's Cliff, Dover, in 1849 at the Royal Academy in 1863, now in the National Maritime Museum in London; this is a smaller version of the subject. The white cliffs of Dover are one of the most well-known views in England - the first sight of the country for travellers by boat from continental Europe. By this time, a tunnel had been constructed for the London-Dover railway, and of course in recent years Shakespeare's Cliff has assumed a new fame as the site of the construction of the Channel Tunnel, which physically links Britain with Europe for the first time since the Ice Age. Although based on drawings made on the spot in 1849, the painting is a late work, and demonstrates Stanfield's assured handling of oil paint, particularly in the sky.
