Born in 1873, Stanley Thorogood trained at Brighton School of Art and won a Gold Medal Travelling Scholarship to Italy. Commonly known for his three dimensional sculptures, including a knight on horseback c1915 at Brighton Art Gallery, his pursued an interest in medieval equestrian subjects.

Physical description | A handbuilt earthenware figure of Joan of Arc, bearing the standard of the French crown, astride a horse rearing over two fallen soldiers and fighting off two soldiers. Decorated with coloured lead glaze. The horse is dapple grey and St. Joan and the soldiers wear colourful costumes and armour. On a wooden base. |
