Place of origin

The designers chose a wood-engraved pattern paper, designed by artist John Lawrence (born 1933), for the Fleming Investment Trust's annual report cover to reflect a sense of tradition and quality, as befitted the bank's target clients (aged 55 or over) and their status as one of the oldest merchant banks. It also provided the flexibility to be reused in future products. Copies of the report can be seen at E.717-1994, and E.4029-1995 - E.4040-1995 inclusive.

[Draft?] The three key points in the designer's brief were that: the targeted investors were aged 55 or over; the institution was one of the oldest established merchant banks; the bank would be regularly introducing new investment trusts. The series had to use a device that could be reapplied indefinitely. The designers therefore chose a wood-engraved pattern paper, which they felt provided a sense of tradition and quality as well as flexibility.(1994)
