Chair

1906 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Oak frame with brass nailed upholstery on seat and splat and square-section legs with slight curvature; the main structural front, side and back rails are tenoned into the front legs and back stiles; a seat frame with a rebate running along its outer top edge sits on top of this structural frame and appears to be simply glued down to it; the front and side rails of the seat frame are mitred to each other and we cannot see if this is more than a butt joint; the side and back rails appear to butt up against the back stiles; the underside of the seat frame reveals evidence of caning suggesting that it would have been caned first before being placed on the main structural frame; the top rail of the seat back is tenoned down into the back stiles, the bottom rail is also tenoned into the back stiles; both rails are rebated at either end with the stiles of the splat fitting snugly against the right angle of the rebate.
