This decorative paper is part of a group (see E.179-1998 to E.198-1998) published in the 1980s by the Judd Street Gallery from designs of the 1920s and '30s. The designs were originally published by the Curwen Press. Examples of the original Curwen Press papers by Enid Marx, Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious are also represented in the collection.

Physical description

Lithograph in yellow and black reproducing an original end-paper design made in 1937 by Harold Jones. The pattern is made from alternating squares, one square of yellow and black horizontal stripes and outer stripes of diagonal black and white lines, and the alternating squares each hold a figure, repeated at intervals, the figures being as various as a house, bird, shears, kettle, a horse's head etc.

Object history note

Acquired in connection with the display A Fine Line - Commercial Wood Engraving in Britain, V&A, 10 October 1994 - 26 March 1995. [Draft label for A Fine Line exhibition?] These sheets were part of a group published in the 1980s by the Judd Street Gallery from designs of the 1920s and '30s, which were originally published by Harold Curwen. Examples of the original Curwen Press papers are also represented in the collection; see the Catalogue of Decorative Papers; Enid Marx, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious.
