Object history | According to Hugh Stannus, author of Alfred Stevens and His Work, 1891, page 28, 'the study and bedroom furniture had been made by his old carpenter, Moss, in 1859 and 60, to fill up his time....' In 1916 the couch was on display at the Bethnal Green Museum when it was favourably compared to a bed designed by Ernest Gimson for the 1916 Arts and Crafts Exhibition. In its review of the exhibition, the Daily Chronicle commented, 'Mr Gimson should be condemned to spend an hour a day for a week before a certain couch by Alfred Stevens in the Bethnal Green Museum.'(quoted by Mary Comino, Gimson and the Barnsleys, 1980, p.123) Formerly on loan to Leighton House (1969-2006). |
