This cypress wood cross is mounted in silver gilt with enamelled filigree and set on stone. On the stone there are two inscriptions in Greek: on one side 'Athos' and on the other a quotation from the Gospel of St Matthew, Xvi, 18 '....thou art Peter, and it is upon this rock that I will build my church.'
