This silver medal depicts Queen Victoria on the obverse side and a lion before a mimosa bush on the reverse. The legend reads 'South Africa 1853'. This medal is inscribed to Captain J.C. Smith and was awarded to survivors of any of the nine Cape Frontier Wars between 1834 and 1854.

Medal, silver. Obv., Profile bust of H.M Queen Victoria, with legend 'Victoria Regina': rev; a lion creeping steathily with a flowering tree behind, and the legend 'South Africa, 1853' Round the edge is inscribed 'Capt. and Asst. Qr Mr Genl. J.C.Smith.' The obv. is stamped 'W.Wyon and the rev., 'L.C.Wyon'. It has an ornamental swivel and an orange ribbed silk ribbon with blue bands.
