This is a silvered electrotype medal made in the 19th century, in England. This medal was copied from the original signed "T. Wyon, junr." The obverse of this medal represents the bust of King George III., "Georgius III. Dei Gratia Britanniarum Rex, F. D." The reverse shows the royal arms and the date 1814. This medal is inscribed both sides "The gift of Colnl McCarty, Govenor of the West Coast of Africa, to Sergt John Harris of the Royal African Corps, for his valiant behaviour in capturing a Spanish brig of 18 guns with only one gun and eleven men in a gun-boat. This victory was achieved on the 7th of April 1818."

Historical context
On 7th April 1818, Sergeant John Harris of the Royal African Corps captured a Spanish brig of 18 guns with only one gun and eleven men in a gun-boat.
After the passing of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1807, the Royal African Corps was one of the forces engaged in British West Africa enforcing the Anti-Slavery laws while the Americans, Portuguese, Spanish and French continued to trade in slaves.
